چکیده

In the recent years, there has been an increasing demand for high quality multimedia services over wireless networks. Triple play services (voice, data and video) require data-rates of the order of several megabits per second (Mbps). However, the large transmission distance and the limited battery power of the hand-held wireless device serves as a major bottleneck. There has been no successful mechanism developed till date that would provide live video streaming over wireless networks. In this paper, a novel cluster-based double dumbbell topology is proposed for adaptive multimedia streaming in WiMAX-based multihop cellular networks. The performance of the network is evaluated for a two-hop model and compared with a traditional single-hop cellular design. Extensive simulations have been carried out in terms of different kinds of network traffic and over different protocols. It is observed that the performance of the proposed cluster-based design for WiMAX networks is significantly superior to the one-hop design, not only in terms of the perceived quality, but also in terms of the loss rate and the average bit rate.

Adaptive Multipath Multimedia Streaming Architecture for Mobile Networks with Proactive Buffering using Mobile Proxies

Real-time multimedia transport has stringent bandwidth, delay and loss requirements. Providing support for such applications in infrastructure-based single hop wireless networks is a great challenge. Since mobile networks are characterized by host mobility, providing continuous streaming service in such an environment is an uphill task. In order to achieve continuous multimedia streaming, we pr...

Cross-Layer Application of Video Streaming for WiMAX: Adaptive Protection with Rateless Channel Coding

Video streaming is an important application of broadband wireless access networks such as IEEE 802.16d,e (fixed and mobile WiMAX) (IEEE 802.16e-2005, 2005; Andrews et al., 2007; Nuaymi, 2007), as it essentially justifies the increased bandwidth compared to 3G systems, which bandwidth capacity will be further expanded in part ‘m’ of the standard (Ahmandi, 2011, written by Intel’s chief technolog...

Multimedia Application Performance on a WiMAX Network

In this paper, we use experimental measurements to study the performance of multimedia applications over a commercial IEEE 802.16 WiMAX network. Voice-over-IP (VoIP) and video streaming (RealPlayer) applications are tested. The WiMAX-based network solidly supports VoIP, providing adequate quality for short to medium duration calls. The voice quality degradation compared to high-speed Ethernet i...

A Fuzzy Based Approach for Rate Control in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks

Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) undergo congestion when a link (or a node) becomes overpopulated in terms of incoming packets. In WMSNs this happens especially in upstream nodes where all incoming packets meet and directed to the sink node. Congestion in networks, if not handled properly, might lead to congestion collapse which deteriorates the quality of service (QoS). Therefore, i...
